Mammalian cells are of increasing importance as host system for virus replication, e.g. in influenza vaccine production. Fundamental virological and cell biological research is focused on qualitative virus-host cell interactions. However, comparatively little is known about the quantitative aspects of virus replication and the correlated host cell response. In this project, progress of virus infection, extent of influenza virus-induced apoptosis, and impact of cultivation conditions on virus yields are being investigated by flow cytometry in cell cultures. Experimental data sets are used in several collaborations to establish mathematical models describing population dynamics at various levels of complexity.
