Active liquid crystal emulsions

We investigate water-based liquid crystal (LC) emulsions. When the surfactant concentration is well above the CMC, the LC droplets exhibit active dynamics. The motion of the droplets is driven by Marangoni instability at the surface which is coupled to the director configuration inside. The aim of the project to understand the underlying mechanisms of the droplet dynamics and self-assembly under external fields.
