Our method of quasi-integrals for the reduction of chemical reaction networks has been successfully applied to pH-oscillators [30, 31]. The transition from simple periodic to bursting behaviour and the periodic-chaotic progression of mixed-mode states could be resolved at least numerically. In parts, the numerical resolution still needs to be sup-ported by rigorous proofs. On the other hand, since the quasi-integral reduction method is not restricted to mass-action kinetics, the underly-ing bifurcation routes from simple to complex behaviour will be eluci-dated for a broad spectrum of reaction mechanisms.
